REGINA -- Wide receiver Taj Smith will miss the Saskatchewan Roughriders game on Thursday due to an ongoing legal issue. The Roughriders said Monday that Smith will miss the game against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers after the team learned he was "charged with violating a condition of release stemming from an incident last August." Smith was charged with assault last August after he and teammate Dwight Anderson allegedly beat a man outside of a Regina nightclub. A judge ordered Smith to stand trial after a preliminary hearing in June found that there was enough evidence to try him but not Anderson. Evidence presented at a preliminary hearing is subject to a publication ban. Smith has 227 receiving yards so far this season with two touchdowns. Dallas Stars Store . He liked what he saw on Tuesday night. Not only did his team post a comeback 3-2 victory in a shootout over the Montreal Canadiens, but the rival Washington Capitals were beaten 5-1 in Buffalo. Dallas Stars Gear ... maybe even more than that. Maybe all season I have to take a few blows. https://www.cheapstarsonline.com/ . Kuznetsov, who was selected by the Capitals in the first round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, has been playing for his hometown team Chelyabinsk Traktor of the KHL. Stars Jerseys 2021 . The move is retroactive to Aug. 1. Hosmer was originally hit on the hand in the first inning of a July 20 loss to Boston. He has played most of the time since, but missed a few contests due to the injury, then departed Thursdays win over the Twins and had tests that revealed the fracture. Fake Stars Jerseys . Consider it received. Attacking on offence early and often, the Penguins topped the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-1 on Saturday night as Jussi Jokinen scored the go-ahead goal in the third period to help give Pittsburgh a 3-2 lead in the Eastern Conference playoff series.EVIAN-LES-BAINS, France -- With teen amateur Lydia Ko of New Zealand in pursuit, Mika Miyazato of Japan held a one-stroke lead Saturday after two rounds at the Evian Championship. Miyazato shot a 2-under 69 and was at 8 under with a round to go in the fifth and last womens major of the year. The four-round tournament was cut to 54 holes after rain left the greens soggy. The course dried out somewhat Saturday but more showers are forecast for the final round. Ko, who is 16 and plays with great composure, had four birdies in an error-free 4-under 67. Her only problem seemed to be her glasses, which did not co-operate in the weather. "Im having to clean all the time," she said. "I really want to get contacts. Cars have got wipers, they should design one for glasses. I would myself if I could." Miyazato, whose day started with bogeys on the first two holes, is looking for her first U.S. LPGA title this year. Suzann Pettersen of Norway bogeyed her two holes on the back nine but had four birdies -- as did Miyazato -- for a 69 to share second with Ko. "I didnt play my perfect game of golf out there, but I made a few really good pars," Pettersen said. Ko successfully defended her Canadian Womens Open title last month, and her game has not lost any of its touch. "I definitely gave myself a lot of opportunities," she said. "Hopefully it will be a good day tomorrow. But I cant hit it as good as I did today every single day." Stacy Lewis, ranked No. 2, is two shots back in fourth affter a 67.dddddddddddd The American is chasing her second major title this season after last months British Open. Top-ranked Inbee Park faces an enormous task in her bid for golf history. The South Korean is trying to become the first professional to win four majors in a season. She is 11 strokes off the lead. She opened with a 74 and followed with a 71 that included a double bogey on the fourth hole. She had to wait until the 13th for her first birdie of the day. Three South Koreans -- Se Ri Pak, Chella Choi and So Yeon Ryu -- and Lindsey Wright of Australia are all three shots behind Miyazato. The oddest round of the day belonged to Swedens Caroline Hedwall: two double bogeys, two bogeys, a hole in one on the 16th and seven birdies. Organizers on Friday decided to shorten the major to 54 holes, having initially hoped to complete the 72 rounds by playing two rounds Sunday. "I understand were in a difficult position," Pettersen said. "Its not ideal for either the championship or for the players or for the tour in general to cut down on major rounds." Some of the greens were expected to be covered overnight in a bid to optimize conditions. Lewis was unhappy about going to 54 holes and thinks the cut should have been shortened, rather than the tournament. "I think a major should be 72 holes. I would have liked to have seen a cut to 50 instead of 70 and try to get 72 (holes) in," she said. "Its going to be muddy and wet. You just got to adjust and see what you can do." ' ' '

MARKHAM, Ont. -- Britni Smith didnt know how it happened. One moment she was on the ice taking a shot, the next she was lifting the Toronto Furies first Clarkson Cup. Smith scored in overtime Saturday as the Furies shut out the Boston Blades 1-0. She struggled to describe how it happened. "I honestly dont even remember how we got in their end," Smith said as she held back her emotion. "But the puck went from (Natalie) Spooner behind the net over to Prevo (Caroline Prevost), I saw some ice in front of me, skated ahead, got a perfect pass on the tape. I shot high-blocker and it just twirled in. "Once I saw it cross the line, hands in the air and that was it." The sixth Canadian womens hockey league championship was the first time Toronto (3-1) and Boston (3-1) met in the championship game and the only time the Furies qualified for the final in club history. Toronto was a surprise finalist after defeating the number-one ranked, three-time Clarkson Cup champion Montreal Stars on Friday in the round-robins lone shootout. The Blades were undefeated in the round robin with an impressive 3-0 record, allowing just four goals against in the entire tournament. The Boston-Toronto rivalry was in full effect as both teams fought hard to the finish. Spooner, who scored the shootout winner in Fridays victory over the number-one ranked Stars, was named the tournaments most valuable player. "This year couldnt really have been better for me," said Spooner. "Obviously nothing beats winning an Olympic gold medal but this is pretty sweet right now and I am really happy about it." Christina Kessler was named the tournaments most valuable player after performing stellar in net for the Furies with 25 saves against Boston following up Fridays spectacular 34 save spectacle. "Kess is amazing," said Furies forward Alyssa Baldin. "It is great to have a goalie like Kessler behind you." Blades forwards Hilary Knight, Kate Buesser and Kelli Stack were offensive stars throughout the tournament. Knight, who scored four goals against Calgary on Friday, led the tournament with five goals while Buesser led with seven points. Boston has three members of Olympic silver medallist American team on its roster including Stack and Knight while Toronto has four members of gold-medal winning Canadian squad playing for the Furies, including Jennifer Wakefield, Tessa Bonhomme and Spooner. The Blades were 5-2 against Toronto during the regular season and in the second day of round-robin action Boston defeated Toronto 2-1 in its closest game of the tournament. The pace of the final was quick from the start. Boston had the majority of quality scoring chances in the first 20 minutes and forced Kessler to make nine first-period saves. After a scoreless two periods, both teams speed and goaltending was on full display in the third. Kessler was forced to make a breakaway, short-handed save robbing Knight while Toronto failed to capitalize on the power play as the game headed to overtime. A day after scoring four goals against Calgary, Knight failed to score for Boston against Toronto while Buesser was also kept scoreless. Buesser finished the tournament leading with three game winning goals. Boston goaltender Brittany Ott played fantastic for the Blades, making 25 saves in front of a sold out crowd. During the regular season Boston was 5-2 against Toronto, and on the second day of round-robin action Thursday the Blades defeated Toronto 2-1 in Bostons closest game of the tournament. Dwyane Wade then went and shot the lights out in the first half. Literally. And once LeBron James finally helped put the Cavs in front early in the fourth quarter, the Miami Heat had one last surge in them. Wade netted 24 of his 31 points in the first half and the Heat spoiled James return to South Beach with a 101-91 win over the Cavaliers. James, who helped the Heat to a quartet of NBA Finals appearances and a pair of titles during his four-year stay with Miami, was the first Cleveland player introduced out of its starting five. I think these fans are great, James said. They always showed their loyalty. He was greeted with a standing ovation with a scattering of boos, but James wasnt able to fully sink in the reaction as Baiamonte quickly went through the rest of Clevelands lineup. The cheer was more elongated midway through the opening frame when the Heat played a video tribute. James, who was facing the Heat for the first time since signing with the Cavs during the offseason, acknowledged the applause by waving to the crowd. A lot of emotions come back, James said. I spent four years here with those guys. Some guys (are) still here, some guys are not here. We put in a lot of hard work and dedication just to be the best we could. James finished with 30 points and eight assists. Wade was a blistering 10-of-16 in the first half, helping the Heat build a margin as high as 17 in the opening 24 minutes before they took a 13-point advantage into the locker room. The start of the second half was delayed due to a power outage which caused the lights to go out. James and Wade were seen conversing, joking and laughing on the scorers table while both teams were waiting for the second half to begin. James fastbreak dunnk at the 11:20 mark of the fourth staked Cleveland to a 78-77 edge, but James was called for a technical for hanging on the rim and Wade sunk the foul shot to tie the game.dddddddddddd A 10-1 run later in the frame put the Heat in front for good. The Cavs missed nine consecutive shots during the surge, which was capped on a Chris Andersen layup with 4:07 left for a 90-81 cushion. Mike Miller nailed a 3-pointer to claw Cleveland within 90-87 with three minutes on the clock, but Danny Granger knocked down a triple at the other end, Andersen converted a layup and Granger hit a jumper to up Miamis margin to 97-87 with 1:19 remaining. Luol Deng posted 25 points, eight rebounds and eight assists for Miami, which has won two of three on the heels of a 2-4 stretch. They blew a 23-point lead and lost at home to Philadelphia Tuesday. Whenever you play on Christmas that means your team is good enough, and to win those games is phenomenal, Wade said. Kyrie Irving, who suffered a left knee contusion in the fourth, supplied 25 points for the Cavaliers, who had their three-game winning streak snapped. Earlier, Wade put in 12 first-quarter points and the Heat took a 30-27 lead into the second. Shawne Williams hit a trey and jumper on consecutive trips down the floor to finish off a 10-1 spurt, staking Miami to a 40-28 margin early in the second. The spread ballooned to 60-43 once Wade knocked down a three and Miami led 62-49 at the break. Cleveland scored seven straight points late in the third to help it whittle the gap to 73-71. Miami took a 77-74 advantage into the final frame. Game Notes Wade was just 2-of-12 from the floor in the second half ... James was 10-of-18 from the foul line ... Chris Bosh missed his seventh straight game for Miami due to a left calf strain ... The Heat held a 44-28 points in the paint advantage. ' ' 'esulting in an interception by linebacker Kyle Knox. "He looks fantastic," defensive co-ordinator Rob Ryan said. "You look out there and you think hes one of those young guys running around. But hes bringing excitement to our defence and knowledge and its awesome to add a great player like him." Quarterback Drew Brees recalled throwing an interception that Bailey returned for a 25-yard touchdown in 2005, when Brees was with San Diego and Bailey with Denver. The Broncos came back to win that game in large part because of Baileys play, and Brees said Baileys play-making was why game plans included "no-throw zones," whenever Denver was the opponent. "Certain routes, certain areas of the field, you just knew: Dont even think about it. Its not worth it," Brees recalled. The Saints hope Bailey will still come up with such plays while mentoring younger cornerbacks including 2010 first-round pick Patrick Robinson, who missed most of last season with a knee injury; rookie Stanley Jean-Baptiste, a second round pick; and third-year cornerback Corey White. Even Keenan Lewis, the Saints top cornerback, could benefit from Baileys presence. "Theres so much value in having a guy like that," Brees said. "Not only what he can teach our young guys, but just hes still and extremely productive player. ... He wouldnt have chosen the New Orleans Saints if he didnt think we had a legitimate shot here -- and that he could help us." Notes: In addition to Byrd, those missing practice included DT John Jenkins, DE Tyrunn Walker, WR Joseph Morgan and WR Brandin Cooks. Cooks was excused to finish the school year at Oregon State. Payton declined to address the conditions of Jenkins, Walker or Morgan, though Morgan wore a sleeve his left knee, which he injured last training camp, putting him out for the season. ' ' '

PARIS -- Rafael Nadals path to a record-extending ninth French Open title could take him through a series of matches against the men who beat him on clay this season. The top-seeded Nadal was drawn Friday to possibly face No. 21 Nicolas Almagro in the fourth round, then No. 5 David Ferrer in the quarterfinals. "Those are opponents that know how to play well on clay," Nadal said. "But its never easy." The other mens quarterfinal matchups could be No. 2 Novak Djokovic vs. No. 8 Milos Raonic, No. 3 Stan Wawrinka vs. No. 7 Andy Murray, and No. 4 Roger Federer vs. No. 6 Tomas Berdych. The possible womens quarterfinals are No. 1 Serena Williams vs. No. 7 Maria Sharapova in what would be a rematch of last years final won by Williams, No. 2 Li Na vs. No. 6 Jelena Jankovic, No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska vs. No. 8 Angelique Kerber, and No. 4 Simona Halep vs. No. 5 Petra Kvitova. Ferrer, who lost to Nadal in the 2013 final at Roland Garros, upset him in the Monte Carlo quarterfinals last month. Almagro ended Nadals 41-match winning streak in Barcelona by beating him in the quarterfinals there a week later. Those defeats were both in best-of-three-set matches. The French Open, like all Grand Slam tournaments, uses a best-of-five format for men, and Nadal was asked Friday whether that gives him an advantage on clay. "I give my most every point, every game, every set. Whether its (best of) three or five, if you want to win, you have to play well," he said. Nadal has three losses on clay in a season for the first time since 2004, when he was only 17 and had yet to play a match at the French Open. He was beaten in the Rome final last weekend by Djokovic; they only could meet in the final in Paris. Djokovic has won the pairs last four meetings, but Nadal is 5-0 head-to-head at the French Open, including victories in the 2012 final and 2013 semifinals. Djokovic, a six-time major champion who needs a French Open title to complete a career Grand Slam, and Federer, owner of a record 17 major titles, were drawn to meet in the semifinals. Nadal, who stands third among men with 13 Grand Slam trophies, could meet Australian Open champion Wawrinka in the semifinals. Nadal is 59-1 for his career at the French Open, with four titles in a row in 2005-08 and again in 2010-13. Williams won the clay-court Grand Slam tournament in 2002, beating her older sister Venus in the final, then waited 11 years before adding a second French Open trophy in 2013. The Williams sisters were drawn Friday to face each other in the third round, which would be their earliest meeting at a Grand Slam tournament since their very first matchup, in the second round of the 1998 Australian Open. Venus is seeded 29th at the French Open. Shes won seven Grand Slam singles titles, 10 fewer than Serena, who holds a 14-10 edge in head-to-head matches. "It never gets easier," Serena said. "Shes essentially the love of my life, so its definitely difficult." Stars Jerseys China .C. -- The shot that would have beaten No. Stars Jerseys 2021 . Brian Giontas agent Steve Bartlett told La Presse on Tuesday that the Montreal Canadiens want to keep their captain - an unrestricted free agent on July 1 - in the fold, while sources tell the paper that the two sides will start talks this week. Cheap Stars Jerseys .3 million qualifying offer to outfielder Michael Cuddyer on Monday.METAIRIE, La. -- Roland "Champ" Bailey, who turns 36 next month, figures theres no use trying to fool anyone -- least of all himself -- about his age. As of now, hes the oldest every-down player on New Orleans roster; place kicker Shayne Graham is his only elder teammate. "If you put me on any team, Im always going to be the old guy," Bailey said. "Its just something Ive got to get used to." Preferring to avoid comparisons to the player he was several years ago, Baily is focusing on what he can do in 2014. Thats when the Saints relatively young and partly overhauled secondary will need his leadership, veteran savvy, and still formidable play-making skills. "One thing I dont want to do is look back or look too far ahead. Im taking care of whats in front of me. Thats getting in shape and getting to know my guys," Bailey said. "My first thing is to lead by example, show how hard I can work and try to lead that way. And all these guys -- I know I have a lot of experience and Im not going to shy away from telling them things I think they need to hear and making sure Im there for them when they have questions." Now entering his 16th NFL season, Bailey has been named to 12 Pro Bowls. His 52 career interceptions are the most among active players. He was among the more high-profile free-agent additions New Orleans made this off-season, along with safety Jairus Byrd. Unlike Bailey, Byrd is in the prime of his career, entering his sixth season with three Pro Bowls and 22 interceptions and 11 forced fumbles already to his name. Also unlike Bailey, Byrd was not available to participate in voluntary off-season practices this week because of back surgery. Coach Sean Payton said Byrds procedure to address a nagging problem with a disc should not sideline the safety beyond the start of training camp. "Its something that didnt need to be done, but both he and ourselves felt like it would be something that would prevent any issues in the fall," Payton said. "Our guess would be that well be real cautious ... and then hell start up training camp with no problem." Bailey, who last season missed 11 games with a left foot injjury, said he feels good now, and backed it up with his performance on the field.dddddddddddd During 11-on-11 drills, Bailey made a leaping breakup of Luke McCowns pass intended for Andy Tanner along the sideline. Later, Bailey tipped McCowns slant pass intended for Kenny Stills, resulting in an interception by linebacker Kyle Knox. NORWICH, England -- Crystal Palace dropped to last place in the Premier League after losing 1-0 at Norwich on Saturday in Tony Pulis first match in charge of the London side. Norwich edged to a nervy win to ease the pressure on manager Chris Hughton following seven league defeats. Gary Hoopers goal after 30 minutes proved enough to give the Canaries a much-needed victory. Nathan Redmond was the instigator with a determined run down the right before Sweden forward Johan Elmander swept the ball into the penalty area. It dropped to Wes Hoolahan at the far post and he squared it for Hooper to roll the ball into the net. Palace, boosted by last weekends away win at Hull, was probably worth a point but Norwich eventually closed out victory at Carrow Road. Torre, MLBs executive vice-president for baseball operations, spoke Tuesday at San Diegos spring training facility before meeting with representatives from eight clubs training in Arizona. Torre was there to answer questions and address concerns regarding the collision rule, which was announced Monday, and expanded instant replay for umpires. Torre said when it came to the collisions rule, he had to "put the uniform back on" because there is never a perfect play at the plate and throws can make contact unavoidable. Any rule change for 2014 required approval from the players union, which negotiated under new head Tony Clark. "The players association had their concerns, too, based on the fact that catchers ... instincts is telling them to do certain things," Torre said. "Tony Clarks concern was it would have been tough to get them use to a new rule in a short period of time. I think we both agreed on the fact we want to eliminate the vicious hit." MLB could not have implemented the rule this year without approval from the players association. In what both sides said was a one-year experiment, the rule allows collisions if the catcher has the ball and is blocking the runners direct path to home plate, and if the catcher goes into the basepath to field a throw tto the plate.dddddddddddd The new rule, 7.13, states "a runner attempting to score may not deviate from his direct pathway to the plate in order to initiate contact with the catcher (or other player covering home plate)." A runner violating the rule shall be declared out, even if the fielder drops the ball. The umpire crew chief can use the new video-review system to determine whether the rule was violated. Torre referenced the hit on Buster Posey that left the NL MVP with broken bone in his lower left leg and three torn ligaments in his ankle in a May 2011 collision with the Marlins Scott Cousins. That injury that helped intensify debate over plate collisions. "At the time I talked to Bruce Bochy several times, and I said I dont see anything we can change," Torre explained. Well, over the last couple of years Ive gotten letters from parents who have kids in the minor leagues, and weve seen some vicious hits in the minor leagues, and its got to get your attention." Posey said Tuesday he thought the rule change was positive because it should eliminate worry of a malicious hit. "Ive always said that the main thing is for everybody to be comfortable with it, that the catchers and runners are protected," Posey said. Torre said there is an onus on baserunners to eliminate a mindset of wanting to separate a catcher from the ball. "I think definitely the baserunner has to have a different resolve, so to speak, in rounding third or tagging up from third," Torre said. ' ' '

MINNEAPOLIS -- After three straight 100-loss seasons, the Houston Astros lineup is suddenly filled with sluggers who can change a game with one swing. Chris Carter and Jon Singleton hit their first career grand slams to power Houston to a 14-5 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Sunday. Carters slam in the seventh inning sailed over the limestone overhang in right field and gave Houston a 9-3 lead. Singleton lined a fastball off Glen Perkins over the right-field wall that made it 14-5 in the ninth. Dexter Fowler and George Springer also homered for the Astros. Houston has now hit 69 homers this season, well on pace to surpass last seasons total of 148, third-worst in the American League. "It puts more strain on the opposing pitchers," Astros manager Bo Porter said. "They feel like, I cant make a mistake here, I cant make a mistake here. That can drain on a staff." The only other time two Astros players hit grand slams in the same game was July 30, 1969, at New York when Denis Menke and Jimmy Wynn both hit slams in an 11-run ninth inning against the Mets. Houston players are also sensing a different vibe now that the lineup is filled with more power. "Its been fun. We like playing off of each other," Singleton said. "Thats definitely a bonus. When one person does well, it carries over and its contagious." Darin Downs (1-0) got the last eight outs as the third reliever to follow starter Colin McHugh, who fanned six and allowed one run over 4 1/3 innings. He walked five and was removed after throwing 101 pitches. Trevor Plouffe and Josh Willingham hit RBI singles as Minnesota made it 5-3 in the fifth, but couldnt get any closer before Carter and Singleton powered the game away. Houston batted around in the fourth inning, scoring three runs after Samuel Deduno (2-4) loaded the bases with nobody out by walking two batters and hitting another. The Astros have won seven of eight on the road and 11 of their last 15 overall as they try to snap a three-year streak of losing 100 games. It was the third time in club history Minnesota allowed two grand slams in the same game. The last time it happened was April 22, 1988, in Cleveland. "They got us today," Perkins said. "I think they swing hard in case they hit it, and they hit them today. Theyre not as bad as people think they are. Gotta give credit to them the way they swing the bat and pitch the ball pretty well." The Twins also officially signed free-agent designated hitter/first-baseman Kendrys Morales on Sunday to bolster their inconsistent offence. But if Minnesota -- now three games under .500 -- wants to remain in the playoff race, its going to need better starting pitching. Deduno walked four and hit two while allowing five runs in three innings on Sunday, raising his ERA to 4.45. As a group, Minnesotas starters are 19-25 with a 4.97 ERA. "Not a good day pitching today. Used a lot of innings out there," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "We still have three games to go (before the next off day), so well get through it. Thats the way it is. They killed it at the end." McHugh struck out four batters in a row during one stretch and extended his scoreless innings streak to a career-high 16 2/3 before Eduardo Nunez homered in the fourth. Springer, named American League rookie of the month after hitting 10 home runs in May, led off the eighth by hitting his second homer in three games. "Its nice to have other guys in the lineup who do the same thing and have more protection where guys cant just pitch around me or pitch around another guy," said Carter, who led Houston with 29 homers last season. "Theres another guy behind him always. Its good for all of us." PHILADELPHIA -- Still clinging to post-season hopes, the Washington Nationals will take every win they can get. Wilson Ramos hit a three-run homer and Corey Brown also went deep to back Gio Gonzalez, helping the Nationals beat the Philadelphia Phillies 9-6 Tuesday night. The Nationals remained 7 1/2 games behind Cincinnati for the second wild-card spot after overcoming a sloppy all-around effort that included three errors, four unearned runs and four wild pitches. "That was an ugly game, one of the ugliest Ive seen," manager Davey Johnson said. "Thats not the way to win a pennant, Ill tell you that." Gonzalez (9-6) gave up five runs -- one earned -- and five hits, striking out six in 5 2-3 innings. The lefty has two straight wins after going seven starts without one. Ramos connected in the second and the Nationals never trailed. Brown hit a solo shot into the second deck off Luis Garcia in his first big-league at-bat of the season in the seventh to extend the lead to 8-5. "The first time back there were a lot of emotions going on," Brown said. "I just tried to tell myself to get a good pitch to hit." Phillies rookie Ethan Martin (2-4) allowed five runs and four hits in 4 2-3 innings. The righty hasnt reached five innings in his last three starts. "Its frustrating," Martin said. "Im trying to go as deep as I can and when I cant do that, its frustrating." Cody Asche was 3 for 4 with a homer and three RBIs for Philadelphia. Rafael Soriano tossed a scoreless ninth for his 37th save in 43 chances. A crowd of 28,826 was the smallest at Citizens Bank Park since April 3, 2008, when 25,831 turned out for a game, also against the Nationals, according to STATS LLC. That was the last time the Phillies drew under 30,000. After leading the majors in attendance in 2011-12, the Phillies are fourth in the NL this season. But theyre averaging 6,000 fewer people than last year. Gonzalez faced a lineup missing Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley and Domonic Brown. Rollins and Utley had the day off and Brown remains sidelined with soreness in his right Achilles. "I was a little uncomfortable the whole game," Gonzalez said. "They were being patient and I wasnt pounding the strike zone. A win doesnt have to be pretty, but just a win." Control issues cost Martin. He hit Jayson Werth on the left forearm with a 93 mph fastball leading off the second. After Adam LaRoches one-out walk, Ramos drove one out to right-centre for a 3-0 lead. Martin walked three in the fifth, including LaRoche with two outs and the bases loaded to force in a run. Justin De Fratus came in and walked Ramos to force in Washingtons fifth run. Werth and Ian Desmond had RBI singles in the sixth for the Nationals to make it 7-2. Asches two-run single in the fourth got the Phillies within one. Kevin Frandsen led off with a single and Carlos Ruiz reached on third baseman Ryan Zimmermans fielding error. They advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Asches hit up the middle. Shoddy defence hurt Gonzalez again in the sixth. With two outs, John Mayberry Jr. reached on shortstop Desmonds throwing error that scored Darin Ruf. Michael Martinez followed with an RBI single and went all the way to third on catcher Ramos fielding error. Gonzalez exited and pinch-hitter Utley greeted Ryan Mattheus with an RBI single that cut it to 7-5. "Theres a few cracks in the dam and Im trying to plug them, but Im running out of fingers," Johnson said. NOTES: Nats LF Bryce Harper started running in after catching the second out in the eighth inning before realizing his mistake. He smiled and took some verbal abuse from the remaining fans. ... The Ottawa RedBlacks, the CFLs newest team, signed its first four players in franchise history on Friday. General Manager Marcel Desjardins signed wide receiver Fred Rouse, defensive back Nick Turnbull, defensive end DiMetrio Tyson and defensive back Jerrell Gavins this week. Rouse started his college football career with Florida State in 2005 before completing it with Concordia-Selma in Alabama. Hes been on the Calgary Stampeders practice roster and played for the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League. Turnbull played college ball at Florida International and appeared in three NFL regular season games with the Atlanta Falcons and Chicago Bears. Tyson played at Jacksonville State and mostly recently played with the San Jose SaberCats of the Arena Football League (AFL). Gavins played for Boise State in college and the Tampa Bay Storm of the AFL. He had a tryout at Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie mini-camp earlier this year as well. "These players will have an opportunity to make our roster once we get onto the field for camp in the spring," said Desjardins. The CFL expansion draft is on Dec. 16 where Ottawa will select 24 players from the eight other CFL teams. This includes eight imports and 16 non-imports. CFL free agency starts Feb. 15 at noon. KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- James Loney delivered the clutch hit for Tampa Bay after Chris Archer kept Kansas City from getting one. Loney hit an RBI single with two outs in the ninth inning to lift the Rays over the Royals 1-0 on Tuesday night following an impressive pitchers duel between top young arms. Archer wriggled out of two bases-loaded jams and went seven innings. Royals rookie Yordano Ventura dazzled in his season debut, holding Tampa Bay to two hits in six innings. "I saw some really good pitching on the other side," Kansas City manager Ned Yost said. "Archer was on top of his game. This guy had a big league two-seamer, 92-95 mph, throwing strikes with it, real efficient with his two-seamer and his slider. He had some nasty stuff working." Loneys grounder to right scored Wil Myers, who snapped an 0-for-15 slump when he reached on an infield single to start the ninth. Myers advanced on a two-out wild pitch by Greg Holland (0-1). "Loney is a very calm guy," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "He does not get excited and I appreciate that about him." Loneys grounder got past a diving Danny Valencia at second base. "I wanted to hit it hard," Loney said. "You always want to hit it hard and hopefully not at somebody." Holland said he would have liked to have that last pitch to Loney back. "With first base open and essentially the winning run on second, Ive got to get that ball down a little more," Holland said. "Ive got to be smarter than that. In that mindset, I didnt execute the pitch and it cost us the game." Joel Peralta (1-1) struck out Valencia with the bases loaded, and Grant Balfour worked the ninth for his second save. Ventura walked none and struck out six, including Myers three times. "Ventura was really throwing good fastballs, triple digits at times," Yost said. "He threw some good breaking balls, but really had a good changeup working to keep them off balance. He matched up against a good pitcher and came out with nothing to show for it." Venturas iinitial scheduled start in Detroit was rained out, so he was making his first appearance since March 29 in spring training.dddddddddddd "Its a lot of time between pitching," Ventura said. "Its my job. No matter how many days off, you have to do your job. I was just glad I was able to do my job today. Im used to pitching every five days. Thats what I want. It was a little tough." Archer pitched out of bases-loaded, one-out jams in the third and sixth. He induced Eric Hosmer to ground into a double play to end the third. In the sixth, Archer retired Alex Gordon on an infield popup and Valencia on a grounder to leave the bases full. "I had confidence," Archer said. "I didnt at any point think I was going to fail. The way we were playing D I felt like we were going to get it done." The Royals loaded the bases again in the eighth against Jake McGee and Peralta, but Valencia looked at three straight strikes from Peralta to end the inning. Mike Moustakas, hitless in his first 21 at-bats this season, opened the Royals ninth with a single to centre but went no further. Tampa Bay missed an opportunity in the eighth when Royals reliever Wade Davis walked Matt Joyce and plunked pinch-hitter Logan Forsythe with a pitch. Davis recovered to strike out Yunel Escobar and David DeJesus. NOTES: The Rays placed LHP Matt Moore on the 15-day disabled list with an elbow injury. LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Matt Kemps agent said the Los Angeles Dodgers are not trading the All-Star outfielder. Dave Stewart spoke Wednesday with Los Angeles general manager Ned Colletti at baseballs winter meetings, and walked away feeling confident the Dodgers wouldnt move his Kemp. Rumours have circulated this week that the Dodgers are listening to offers for Kemp, who is heading into the third year of an eight-year, $160 million contract. "For the time being they are not going to move him," Stewart said. "He didnt even say that. I put in the words for the time being because you never know. Somebody could come along and overwhelm them with a player or players or a combination of players that would make it worth their while." Stewart said Kemp, who is coming off left ankle and left shoulder surgery, is right on track to be ready for the upcoming season after he hit only six homers and had 33 RBIs while hitting .270 in 73 games last year. With Kemp on the mend, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said Tuesday he may have to juggle starts for Kemp, Yasiel Puig, Carl Crawford and Andre Ethier. "Ill say this, and this is me talking, A healthy Matt Kemp is better than anybody theyve got playing centre field," Stewart said. "They may play four outfielders but, if hes healthy, hes not going to be a platoon guy. Im saying that. If hes healthy, which we have no reason to believe hes not going to be healthy, hes going to play centre field every day and they can figure out what they want to do with the other three." Brett Jones was fresh out of university at Calgarys training camp a year ago. The centre from Weyburn, Sask., went on to become the first offensive lineman to be named the Canadian Football Leagues most outstanding rookie. The Stampeders hope Lavertu is also a quick study. Calgary swung a draft-day deal with Ottawa to make the Laval athlete the first overall pick May 13. The 24-year-old from Quebec City played centre for the Rouge et Or, but with Jones so successful at that position in 2013, Lavertu has worked most of the pre-season at guard. Jones may be two years younger than Lavertu, but hes helping usher the older rookie into professional football. "Hes given me advice and helped me during meetings. He sits behind me," Lavertu said Tuesday at McMahon Stadium. "Brett is an inspiration for me because he did everything well. He has great technique, good footwork, he knows everything thats happening on the field." Jon Gott, who was dealt to the expansion Redblacks for the first pick in the draft, and the retired Dimitri Tsoumpas mentored Jones in his first year in the league, so Jones wants to pay it forward. "They just made sure I was welcomed into the group," Jones said. "Were known as a unit. I just want whats best for the offensive line." Lavertu, who is six foot three and 298 pounds, won three Vanier Cups and was a three-time CIS all-star with Laval. He was surprised Calgary drafted him because of Jones, but Lavertu is also excited at the prospect of blocking for star running back Jon Cornish.dddddddddddd "If they want me to play guard, Im going to play guard," Lavertu said. "Its the opportunity theyve given to me. Im going to take it and do the best I can to be successful at right guard. "We have Jon Cornish and a lot of good running backs. I love to run-block for him. When you run the ball like that and control the clock like that, you are going to win." Lavertu played right guard in the first half and returned to centre for the second when Jones came out of Saturdays pre-season win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Calgary rushed for 193 yards in a 23-20 victory. The Stampeders are in Vancouver to face the Lions in another pre-season game Friday. Calgary hosts Montreal in their regular-season opener June 28. As Jones did, Lavertu must adapt to the quicker pace of the pro game as well the calibre of the oppositions defensive line. "Theres a lot more things hes responsible for and the talent hes going against every play is equal (to him) or better," Calgary offensive line coach Pat DelMonaco said. "You have to factor in some of them have five, six or seven years of experience." The six-foot-two, 321-pound Jones says Lavertu makes the same errors he did in his early days as a Stampeder. "I made a ton of mistakes," Jones said. "Youre going to make mistakes and its just not making the same mistake twice. "Hes doing great. This offence isnt that easy. You can just see hes making those changes and just making those improvements to get better. Whenever he gets a chance to play, Im excited to play beside him and hope the best for him." ' ' '

The tournaments poster boy with the dyed-blonde fauxhawk fractured a vertebra in his back during Brazils 2-1 quarterfinal victory over Colombia on Friday. The injury has ruled the striker out of the rest of the competition, dealing a massive blow to the teams chances of finally winning a World Cup at home. Brazil advanced to the semifinals for the first time in 12 years, with the goals coming from defenders Thiago Silva and David Luiz. But the jubilation was quickly tempered when Brazil team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar said Neymar broke his third vertebrae and is expected to be out for several weeks, ruling him out of Tuesdays semifinal match against Germany in Belo Horizonte. "Its a situation that leaves us in a difficult position for the match against Germany," Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari said. "But we have great players and if I have to change something I will do it and we will be OK." The 22-year-old Neymar has been the focal point of both the Brazilian team and the entire World Cup, and he lived up to expectations with four goals in the first three matches. But he took a knee to the back late in the match against Colombia at the Arena Castelao in a collision with Juan Camilo Zuniga. The Brazilian star was crying in pain as he was carried off the field, and was taken to a private clinic. He has since been released. "He will not be in condition to play, he will need a few weeks to be fit again," said Lasmar, the team doctor. "He is very, very sad." The foul on Neymar came toward the end of one of the dirtiest games of the tournament as Brazil committed 31 fouls and Colombia had 23. Brazil will also be without Silva for Tuesdays match against Germany. The captain must sit out after getting his second yellow card of the tournament after impeding Colombia goalkeeper David Ospina. Brazil, which is trying to become the first host to win the World Cup since France in 1998, had been eliminated in the quartterfinals at the last two tournaments.dddddddddddd The "Selecao" lost to the Netherlands in the quarterfinals in 2010 and to France in 2006 after winning its fifth title in 2002. Back in 1950, Brazil needed only a draw in the final match to win the World Cup, but the team lost to Uruguay in a match known as the "Maracanazo." This time around, Brazil won its group and then beat Chile on penalties in the second round. On Friday against Colombia, Silva gave Brazil the lead in the seventh minute, scoring with his left knee after a corner from Neymar passed through the Colombian defence. He celebrated the goal by pointing to the emblem on his jersey and shouting, "This is Brazil, this is Brazil." Luiz added the second from a free kick in the 69th, side-footing a long-range shot into the top of the net. Colombia got one back in the 80th. James Rodriguez scored his tournament-leading sixth goal from the penalty spot after Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar brought down substitute Carlos Bacca inside the area. Rodriguez tried to control the pace of the match, but it was Brazil that created most of the scoring chances as Ospina had to make a series of saves in the first half alone. The Colombians tried to pressure after Rodriguezs late penalty, but Brazil held on with solid defending. Colombia, playing at the World Cup for the first time since 1998 and in the quarterfinals for the first time ever, had entered the match after scoring 11 goals, second only to the Netherlands. "After not playing in the World Cup for so long, we were able to show the value of the Colombian football and the talent of some of our players," said Colombia coach Jose Pekerman, an Argentine. "They showed great spirit and presence of mind. They came to play a great World Cup, not just to participate." There was a lot of talk about Rodriguez and Neymar before the match, but the 22-year-old forwards didnt really deliver in Fortaleza. Rodriguez scored the late penalty but was otherwise mostly ineffective, as was Neymar before he left on a stretcher. ' ' '

DALLAS -- Henrik Lundqvist was in such a zone, it was impressive enough that the Dallas Stars got two pucks past the New York Rangers goalie. However, that left them one short. Lundqvist made a season-high 41 saves -- including a career-best 23 in the first period -- to carry the Rangers to a 3-2 win over the Stars on Thursday night. He also assisted on Rick Nashs first-period goal that put New York in front 1-0. Lundqvist turned aside every Stars shot in the first and stopped 35 of 36 through 40 minutes to keep the Rangers in a 1-1 tie. "The way the game was played, I had to be aggressive," Lundqvist said. "Especially in the first, it felt like the puck was all over the place, and they were putting a lot of shots on net and rebounds. "It felt good to get a period like that, to really work hard." Chris Kreider and John Moore scored 37 seconds apart in the first 1:55 of the third period to give New York a 3-1 lead. Rangers coach Alain Vigneault appreciated the effort of his star goalie, especially his contribution to the offence. "Henrik made an unreal pass so that we had that quick breakout, that quick strike (by Nash)," Vigneault said. "After that, Henrik put on a display in the first period." The third-period goals took some pressure off of Lundqvist, who entered the game with a 7-9 record despite a 2.38 goals-against average. "We came out in the third, and just made up our mind we need this game," Lundqvist said. "That was a great feeling, to see we scored two quick ones there." Alex Chiasson brought Dallas back within a goal by scoring at 8:27 of the third. It just wasnt enough. "We cant be happy with the way (the first period) came out because it was 1-0," Stars coach Lindy Ruff said. "You have to give Lundqvist a lot of credit. "The one goal they scored came on a power play when we were dumping it up ice, and we get caught on a breakaway. You cant do that." Just 12 seconds after Chiassons goal, Stars goalie Kari Lehtonen stopped Nash on a penalty shot. Nash had scored New Yorks first goal at 6:27 of the first period. It was his first goal this season, in his second game back after missing 17 games because of a concussion. "I was hoping he thought I was going to do the same move that I scored on, and then bring it right back and tuck it in," Nash said. "He played it well." Lehtonen knew that Nash has several tricks in his scoring arsenal. "I needed to make that save against Nash to keep it a one-goal game," Lehtonen saiid.dddddddddddd"He has three or four different moves. He scored the first one on a breakaway when I thought he was going to do something else. "On the second one, I just had to be patient. My long legs helped me there. I was able to reach out and get that one." Dallas best chance to tie the game came with 3 minutes remaining. Jamie Benns shot from in front hit Lundqvist, who wrapped himself around the puck to prevent a rebound. "The biggest save of the night was Lundqvists on Benns play." Ruff said. When Dallas tied it 1-1 on Stephane Robidas goal at 8:46 of the second period, it was the Stars first power play goal in eight home games this season. They had been unsuccessful in their first 26 opportunities. The Rangers, who started a five-game road trip, had scored only two goals -- both on the power play -- in their three previous games when they went 1-2. Nashs go-ahead goal came on New Yorks first power play of the night. He skated in, put the puck on his forehand and pushed it in the net to the right of Lehtonen. "When youre struggling at scoring, youve got to look to your special teams for a boost, and tonight we got it," Nash said. Dallas had two first-period power plays, but failed to score even though they put six shots on Lundqvist. The Stars broke through with Robidas third goal. He took a cross-ice pass from Sergei Gonchar at the left point and blasted a slap shot that deflected off a defender and past Lundqvist. New York had an apparent goal disallowed about 5 minutes later. From a scramble in front, the puck went into the upper right corner of the net. On review, it was determined that Rangers centre Derek Brassard had batted the puck across the goal line. During the period, Lundqvist exceeded his previous season high of 31 saves. The Rangers came out quickly in the third and recorded the first four shots. On the third drive, Kreider broke the tie. Their next shot was the goal by Moore. Lundqvist then did the rest to protect the lead, "You can talk about him every single night, Nash said. "He was the best player on the ice and he was the difference." NOTES: Dallas went 1 for 5 on the power play. In their last 10 games overall, they are 3 for 35. ... Nash is one of three current players, with the Islanders Thomas Vanek and the Capitals Alex Ovechkin, who entered the season with eight consecutive 20-goal seasons. ... Lundqvists career high for saves is 50, in an overtime game on March 4, 2010, against Pittsburgh. He stopped 48 of 49 shots in regulation on April 6 at Carolina. ' ' '
